Market Notes

Go early for the good stuff. Bread, eggs, flowers, and the best produce tend to move quickly.

Bring a tote, & maybe cash. Most vendors take cards, but small bills still make things easier.

Walk once before you buy. See what looks good, then build the meal from there.

Ask what’s peaking. The best market intel usually comes from the person behind the table.

Leave a little room. For flowers. For peaches. For the thing you didn’t technically come for.

What’s in season

June: strawberries, cherries, asparagus, peas, radishes, greens, herbs
July: blueberries, raspberries, cucumbers, zucchini, green beans, sweet corn, tomatoes
August: peaches, plums, melons, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn
September: apples, pears, grapes, squash, beets, carrots, late tomatoes

Markets occasionally shift their dates, hours, and locations, so double check the markets’ websites before making a special trip. & if there’s a neighborhood market we missed, send it our way. We’re always adding to the list.

Happy market season, Chicago.
